Big Bend Community of West Texas. We strive to build a bridge between the existing indigenous community and the burgeoning arts environment by encouraging a sense of inclusion through access to the artistic process. Our mission has a special focus to offer meaningful art activity to the youth and children of the area.
Through the eight years of the Marfa Studio's history the organization has provided a variety of art education services to the Marfa and Big Bend community. This has included our studio art classes for adults and children, an active gallery program for area artists, and an after school teen-work program. It was determined in December of 2006 by the Marfa Studio Board of Directors to sell our building and dedicate our efforts to a single program: The Studio in the Elementary School (SITES).
Now in its third year, SITES provides an extraordinary opportunity for the community’s children to experience art making in a hands-on, supportive and creative atmosphere. The art curriculum is designed to be in alignment with state-mandated learning objectives at age and grade appropriate levels. The students benefit intellectually and culturally from a broad array of artist-led projects and visual arts exploration.
